Vineyard and terroir
Gemini is both a cru and a riserva, produced from the best vines surrounding the cellar. These vines were planted in 1993 at 400 metres above sea level. The soil combines tuff, clay, sand and marl. Planting density is 5,500 vines per hectare, with spurred-cordon and Guyot training in the Tuscan inverted form. Production is approximately 60 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually at the beginning of October and destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in dedicated truncated-conical vats of approximately 70 hl. Malolactic fermentation follows in the same vat.
Ageing
The wine continues to mature in its dedicated 70 hl truncated-conical vat for as long as required, generally for no less than 36 months.
Technical data
Average alcohol is 14.5% vol., average total acidity is 5.2 g/L, and average dry extract is 34. Production is approximately 10,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Intense, bright ruby red. The broad and persistent bouquet combines elegant fruit with ethereal marasca cherry preserved in alcohol, dried tobacco and complex sweet spices. Velvety, opulent and persistent tannins are supported by crisp acidity, indicating substantial ageing capacity. The finish is juicy, savoury and markedly mineral, with sustained energy that stimulates salivation. The wine has a pronounced personality and a natural affinity with substantial meat dishes.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 15–18 °C. Pair with red meat, game, aged cheeses and traditional Tuscan cuisine. It may also be enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine.
