Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards are in the province of Monreale, southwest of Palermo, with northeastern exposure and sandy clay soils. The estate’s vineyards lie at 300–450 m above sea level on stony soils. They cover 100 ha of the estate’s 180 ha.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in mid-September, then macerated and fermented at a controlled temperature of 24–28 °C.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in concrete vats, with 20% matured in oak barrels. It then rests for a further 12 months in bottle.
Label / history
The wine is dedicated to Don Pietro, the father of Francesco Spadafora. Azienda Agricola Spadafora’s history as a winery began in the 1960s, when Duke Pietro Spadafora, a descendant of an ancient aristocratic family, inherited the estate. His son, winemaker Francesco Spadafora, subsequently expanded the vineyard area significantly.
