Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from Poggetti at Massa Marittima. The vineyard has a south-west exposure and rich, loamy, slightly acidic soil. Yields are limited to 3,000 kg/ha.
Grapes
100% Montepulciano.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in early December, after the grapes have begun to dehydrate naturally on the vine. This late picking increases the concentration of sugars. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine remains in oak barrels for at least 12 months.
Tasting profile
Ruby red with purple highlights. The rich bouquet combines plum, fig and toasted almond, with a sweet, spicy character. On the palate, acidity balances the sweetness and leads to a long, rounded finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 14°C. Scalabreto is intended for desserts, but it can also accompany chicken-liver pâté as an appetizer.
Label / history
Scalabreto takes its name from a Maremman dialect term for steep, stony terrain.
