Grapes
The blend comprises 85% Nero d’Avola and 15% other red varieties grown in Sicily or neighbouring regions.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed. The must ferments at 24–28 °C with selected yeast cultures. Alcoholic fermentation is stopped once the intended residual sugar level has been reached.
Ageing
The wine rests in stainless-steel tanks for four to eight months. It is bottled in June of the year after the harvest.
Label / history
The name Piantaferro combines pianta, meaning “plant” or “crop”, with ferro, meaning “iron” or “rod”. It refers to a local farming tradition of marking newly discovered fertile land by driving a stake into the ground. The range’s trademark depicts three stylised rows of vines, representing the fertility of the Piave land.
The winery name 47 Anno Domini refers to 47 AD, the year in which Emperor Claudius completed the Roman road Claudia Augusta. The winery’s 25 hectares of vineyards now lie on both sides of this historic road.
