Vineyard and terroir
The vineyard lies in the commune of Osimo at 150 m, with a southeastern exposure. Its very deep, clay-rich soil contains abundant limestone and derives from marine deposits dating to the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods. Yields are limited to 50–60 hl/ha.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, beginning with Merlot in early September, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon toward the end of September and Montepulciano in the second half of October. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in steel tanks for 14–15 days at 27–29 °C, with regular punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in 225 L oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine ages for 14 months in 225 L oak barrels, followed by 12 months in bottle in temperature-controlled winery cellars.
Tasting profile
Pelago has a maritime character, with distinctive aromas and flavours associated with its coastal setting. Montepulciano expresses the character of its native terroir, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot contribute aroma, complexity and a Bordeaux character.
Serving and pairing
A large, wide glass is recommended to increase exposure to oxygen and soften the impression of concentrated tannins.
Label / history
First produced in 1994, Pelago is made only in the finest vintage years. Its name derives from pelagos, the Ancient Greek word for “sea.” The wine rose to prominence after winning the International Wine Challenge in London in 1997.
