Vineyard and terroir
Anfiteatro is a single-vineyard Sangiovese produced from Montefili’s historic vineyard planted in 1975. The vines grow at 500 metres on Pietraforte soils, in a site shaped by persistent wind. Altitude, restraint and extended development define the wine’s taut, mineral character.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Technical data
The naturally scarce 2020 production comprises 2,909 individually numbered bottles and 75 magnums.
Tasting profile
Deep garnet in colour with luminous edges. The nose layers dark cherry, cassis and wild blackberry with iron, crushed stone, dark chocolate and tobacco. Its high-altitude character appears as aromatic clarity and mineral composure rather than sharpness.
The palate is structured yet fluid, built around a firm, ferrous core and finely grained tannins that create depth without heaviness. Freshness and savoury intensity carry the fruit into a long, measured finish with quiet persistence. The broader profile combines tension and poise, while dried cherry, ripe nectarine, orange peel and fig are joined by cinnamon, ginger and smoke. The texture is velvety and elegant, culminating in a very long, meditative finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18 °C after decanting for 1–2 hours. Pair with aged pecorino, roasted game or winter risotto. The ideal drinking window extends from the present to 2042 and beyond.
Vintage notes
The 2020 vintage is defined by balance rather than force. Ferrous nuances and mineral tension accompany a composed structure, while the finish develops gradually in the glass. Its combination of depth, freshness and restraint is intended to reward patient drinking and further cellaring.
Label / history
Produced from Montefili’s oldest vines, Anfiteatro represents the heart of the estate and its most concentrated expression of single-vineyard Sangiovese.
