Vineyard and terroir

The 2021 Gran Selezione comes from two high-altitude parcels, Canalone and Lago, planted in 1998 and 2002 respectively. Together they cover 4.9 hectares. The vineyards lie at approximately 480–500 metres above sea level on Pietraforte and Galestro soils.

The vines are trained to a high cordon positioned 1.5 metres above the ground. Viticulture follows a low-intervention approach, with targeted applications of organic and natural fertilisers, no insecticides, restricted yields, and close attention throughout pruning and harvest.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The fruit from Canalone and Lago is vinified separately to preserve the character of each parcel. Fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, followed by maceration in stainless-steel vessels.

Ageing

The wine matures for 15 months in 30 hl oak barrels and then spends a further eight months ageing in bottle.

Technical data

  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Total acidity: 6.25 g/L
  • Residual sugar: less than 1 g/L
  • Total SO₂: 86 mg/L
  • Cultivated area: 4.9 hectares

Tasting profile

Redcurrant and plum aromas meet fresh pomegranate, orange zest, and restrained spice. The palate is lively and energetic, with fine, well-integrated tannins providing elegance and balance. Dark cherry, blackberry, and refined spice also shape the wine's vivid, lifted expression, while the finish retains freshness and vitality.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C and allow the wine to breathe for about 30 minutes. Pair with pasta in tomato-based or meat sauces, substantial meat dishes, or aged cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season brought variable weather and marked temperature changes, including a hot, dry summer. Careful vineyard management was therefore particularly important. Harvest took place during the final week of September. The vintage emphasises Sangiovese's fruit, freshness, and drinkability rather than sheer concentration.
