Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown near the coast. The Rocca di Montemassi estate lies in the foothills of Montemassi in Tuscany, between the Tyrrhenian coast and the foothills of the metal-bearing hills. The 430 ha estate includes 160 ha of vineyards.
Grapes
Sangiovese leads the blend, with smaller proportions of Merlot and Syrah.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested mechanically, destemmed and gently crushed. The must spends 20 days in vertical fermenters and undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in 350-litre French oak barrels, followed by three months in the estate’s cellars after bottling.
Tasting profile
Sangiovese contributes black fruit, dried cherry, black tea, sun-dried tomato, cedarwood and sage notes. Merlot and Syrah bring balance, juiciness and brightness.
Label / history
The Zonin family has owned the Rocca di Montemassi estate since 1999.
