CIVB publishes voluntary €1,100-per-tonneau reference for bulk Bordeaux red
The non-binding indicator for non-organic AOP Bordeaux red, equivalent to about €122 per hectoliter, is intended to guide negotiations between winegrowers and négociants.
The Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) made the indicator public on 20 October. It applies to non-organic AOP Bordeaux red sold in bulk and is set at €1,100 per tonneau, or about €122 per hectoliter. The figure is a guide rather than a mandatory price, leaving growers and merchants free to use it in their negotiations or disregard it.1
The CIVB calculated the reference as the arithmetic mean of an average production cost and the average bulk price during the 2025/26 campaign. The production-cost estimate was €1,300 per tonneau, based on accounting data from about 60 estates strongly focused on bulk sales, while the campaign average recorded by the interprofessional body was €877. The midpoint was rounded to €1,100.1
According to the CIVB figures cited by the source, bulk wine represented 63% of the first commercialization of Bordeaux red in the 2025/26 campaign. The body used a provision under Article 172 ter of the common market organization rules that allows producer groups and interprofessional organizations to publish market-orientation indicators for AOP or IGP wines.1
The reference arrives amid efforts to reduce supply in Bordeaux. Over the previous 3 years, 24,000 hectares were uprooted in Gironde. In 2025, Bordeaux produced 789,000 hectoliters of red wine while 936,500 hectoliters left cellars, indicating a reduction in stocks; AOP Bordeaux red accounted for 27% of total Bordeaux production that year. The CIVB may revise the indicator if market conditions change.1
