Swirl launches personal wine recommendation app in the Nordics

The Stockholm startup says its mobile app learns from private user ratings and structured producer information instead of public scores or AI-generated wine analysis.

Stockholm-based wine technology startup Swirl launched its mobile app in the Nordic countries in March. Available on iOS and Android, it allows users to scan a bottle label or search for a wine, consult information derived from producers’ technical sheets and record a private rating. The company says these assessments gradually form an individual taste profile that supports recommendations for wines with similar characteristics.1

Swirl presents its model as an alternative to platforms centered on public reviews and average scores. The company argues that collective approval does not necessarily predict an individual drinker’s preferences and says its service is intended to make choices easier across restaurant lists, retail shelves and large online catalogs.1

Producer data matched with private preferences

The company says it does not base its wine analysis on AI-generated content. Its system instead matches structured information supplied by producers and wineries with each user’s ratings and preferences. Swirl describes this method as data-driven and says grounding recommendations in winemakers’ source material is intended to limit errors.1

Co-founder Jade Arana, who oversees product, design and growth, said wine discovery relies too heavily on broad public opinion even though taste is personal. Her stated aim is to move attention away from ratings and help users understand their own palates.1

Swirl credits co-founder Emil Hed with developing the recommendation engine. The company describes him as a sommelier with a robotics degree who leads engineering. Head sommelier Marcus Henningsson previously worked at Frantzén, a restaurant holding 3 Michelin stars, according to Swirl. The startup says this combination of technical and wine knowledge informs the product’s design.1

Catalog, privacy and commerce

Founded in 2024, Swirl says its catalog contains more than 10,000 wines. The app also provides tasting notes, favorites, wish lists, personal collections, home-cellar management, food-pairing guidance and connections to selected wine retailers. Through partner stores, users can shop for bottles ordered by their similarity to the user’s taste profile.1

Ratings and notes are private by default and do not appear in a public social feed, the company says. Swirl contrasts that design with wine communities where visible reviews can influence a bottle’s reputation. It is targeting consumers seeking accessible digital guidance while retaining detail for those who want to learn about wine.1

Swirl also links personalization with more deliberate consumption, saying it wants to connect drinkers with suitable producers rather than encourage greater volume. Future versions are planned to give more prominence to smaller wineries, organic and biodynamic producers, and traditional estates focused on sustainability.1

Company claims and global reach

Swirl has not published a complete breakdown of its users. It claims thousands of registrations and weekly returning users, alongside about 27,000 Instagram followers and more than 40 million organic views without paid marketing. The source reports that these figures could not be independently verified from the company’s press materials.1

The startup is entering a market where personalization is already common in retail, food and entertainment apps, while wine services have remained more dependent on broad review systems. Swirl is betting that personal feedback combined with structured wine data will produce more relevant suggestions than crowd scores. Hed has said stronger personalization could improve trust and long-term engagement as more consumers discover and purchase wine online.1

Swirl says it is supported by KTH Innovation, Sting and Betula Partners. Although based in Stockholm, the company offers the English-language app worldwide, extending its intended market beyond the Nordic countries.1
