Vega Sicilia unveils Deiva, its first white wine made in Spain

Tempos Vega Sicilia is entering Rías Baixas with Deiva 2024, an Albariño. The new wine follows years of work with Galician vineyards and a €20 million project. Sales of the first vintage are expected in 2027.

The group, best known for its Spanish red wines, has unveiled Deiva 2024, a white wine made from 100% Albariño and aged for 18 months. According to Vinetur, the first plots for the project were acquired in 2018. Tempos Vega Sicilia now has its own vineyard base in Rías Baixas and a new winery in Crecente, in the province of Pontevedra.1

Two sides of Rías Baixas

Deiva draws on 2 subzones: Val do Salnés and O Condado do Tea. According to the group’s deputy head of viticulture, Patricia Recio, the warmer Condado helps the grapes ripen more fully, while Salnés provides acidity and tension. The team is studying individual plots to understand how these differences can be brought together in the wine.2

According to La Región, the company has assembled 24 ha of its own vineyards, while the initial investment in the Galician project totalled €20 million. Around €15 million of that amount went towards building the winery and a further €5 million towards acquiring land. The name Deiva is linked to the River Deva, whose waters reach some local vineyards through traditional irrigation channels.3

The first vintage preceded the new winery

Deiva 2024 was made at a temporary facility in Sanxenxo while construction continued in Crecente. The presentation of the first wine and the start of operations at the new complex are therefore separate stages of the project. La Región reports that production at the new winery is scheduled to begin in 2027.3

For future production, the team is considering a range of vessels: stainless steel, concrete, granite and large wooden foudres. The group’s technical director, Gonzalo Iturriaga, told La Voz de Galicia that the choice will depend on the individual wine. Deiva does not envisage a single fixed approach for every vintage.2

What to expect from the release

The 2024 vintage is expected to be the first to go on sale. The sources agree on 2027 but give different timings within the year. La Voz de Galicia cites an indicative bottle price of €40–50. These are preliminary details about a future release.1 · 2 · 3

For Tempos Vega Sicilia, Deiva marks a new Spanish direction in white wine. The group already has experience producing white wines in Hungary: its Oremus estate in Tokaj makes the dry white Mandolás from Furmint, as well as sweet wines. Deiva’s novelty lies specifically in being the group’s first white wine made in Spain.4 · 1
