Monte Baldo: a dialogue between viticulture and the mountain landscape

The conference took place at Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi in Brentonico on 11 October 2024. Monte Baldo, home to more than 1,660 plant species, was examined as a setting where winegrowing and mountain-landscape protection might develop together.

Albino Armani conceived and promoted the event and proposed collaboration among local enterprises and communities. Specialists discussed the role of elevation under climatic and social change, Monte Baldo’s pedoclimate and doline effect, and comparisons with the Valle di Cavedine and Val di Cembra. Its geology includes limestone, dolomia, scaglia rossa and basalt.

The proposed “Modello Brentonico” would make viticulture an economic resource without compromising landscape integrity. Sustainable farming, responsible management and biodiversity protection form its basis. The Swiss Valais was considered as a comparative model, and participants proposed a collective working group involving wineries, public administrations and residents.
