Allegrini and the Art of Dry Stone Walls: A Course to Preserve the Landscape

The fifth dry-stone-wall restoration course in Fumane was organised by Associazione Habitat with the San Zeno Salesian Institute and the International Terraced Landscapes Alliance Foundation, with sponsorship from Allegrini.

Known locally as marogne, the mortar-free walls make steep vineyards safer to cultivate while limiting erosion. They retain soil and moisture, regulate and filter runoff, trap sediment and provide biological corridors and habitat. The programme treats their restoration as both cultural transmission and practical ecological engineering. Villa Cavarena was presented as an example where the walls retain their agricultural function while contributing to the landscape.
