Why biodiversity in the vineyard matters: the benefits of vineyards surrounded by woodland

Every vineyard is embedded in a mosaic of woodland, Mediterranean scrub and agricultural ground. Vines therefore grow within a network of insects, birds, microorganisms, spontaneous plants and trees rather than in isolation.

The diverse environment supports beneficial insects and predators, reduces ecological fragility and helps vines adapt to stress. Woodland moderates heat and cold, holds moisture in the landscape, protects soil and creates varied habitats. These functions do not eliminate the need for careful farming, but they provide a more balanced foundation.

Biodynamic principles are combined with experience and observation, including knowledge inherited from previous inhabitants of the hills. Preserving the woods is part of daily vineyard work because balanced vines ripen more consistently, cope better with vintage variation and produce fruit more faithful to its place.
