About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Costa Grande is a sheltered, north-west-facing slope with good ventilation, conditions that can bring slightly earlier ripening on average. The soil consists of calcareous marl with abundant clay and a smaller proportion of red sandy earth.

The vineyard was replanted in 2000 at 7,000 vines per hectare, using massal selections from Il Nocio together with selected clones. Its fruit had contributed to other Boscarelli wines since the 1980s; beginning with the 2015 vintage, Costa Grande was vinified and bottled separately as a cru.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The grapes are picked manually and transported in crates, then destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts lasts approximately one week in oak vats filled to no more than two-thirds of capacity, at a controlled temperature of 28–30 °C. Pumping over and manual punching down are used during fermentation. When appropriate, maceration continues for another 5–8 days.

Ageing

The wine spends its first year in 5 hL tonneaux and its second year in 25 hL casks. Several months in concrete tanks follow, then 6–12 months of bottle ageing before release.

Technical data

Average production is approximately 4,000 bottles per year.

Serving and pairing

The cru can develop for several decades. Depending on the vintage, its recommended period of optimal maturity is generally between the fifth and eighth year after harvest.

Label / history

The Costa Grande selection has been used in the estate’s wines since the 1980s. The 2015 vintage was the first to be vinified and bottled independently as a named cru.
