Campo alla Sughera Acquires 3 New Hectares of Vineyards

In April 2024, Campo alla Sughera expanded with a 3.3 ha parcel on the Via Bolgherese, a short distance from the estate and close to Castagneto Carducci. The southwest-facing property includes 1 ha planted in the early 2000s with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small portion of Vermentino; this hectare was already devoted to Bolgheri DOC production.

Analysis confirmed the suitability of the soils. Proximity to the hills has created alluvial deposits rich in pebbles and fine sands, while the existing Merlot sector also contains appreciable clay, gravel and pebbles. The uncultivated section was to be prepared through fertilisation and levelling ahead of planting in 2025.

The acquisition followed the purchase of 2 ha in early 2022, of which 1.5 ha were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon in 2023 to support future production of Arnione Bolgheri DOC Superiore.

The expansion formed part of a broader period of investment and repositioning. Winery Director Tommaso Alessandri connected it with four consecutive years of double-digit growth and the Knauf family's continuing commitment to both economic and qualitative development. The production strategy remains centred on detailed soil analysis, microterroir management, triple grape selection, gravity handling and separate microvinification. Alessandri described perfection as unattainable in itself but valuable as a direction that continually raises standards.
