Cantina Cardèto story

CO.VI.O. was founded on 30 August 1949 by the Associazione dell’Agricoltura together with 13 producers. It began in Viale I Maggio at Orvieto Scalo, where its premises underwent repeated enlargement.

White Orvieto received DOC recognition and an approved production code in 1971. A new storage facility followed at Sferracavallo in 1975. The first bottles carrying the cooperative’s own brand were produced with mobile equipment in 1987, after which a new vinification and storage cellar and a small bottling line were installed.

Rosso Orvietano gained DOC status in 2002, drawing on a medieval red-wine tradition associated in part with the Della Greca family’s former holdings. In 2004 the wine complex gained a bottling room, warehouses and a barrel cellar, reaching 12,000 m². The four-person line could bottle 6,000 units per hour.

The cooperative adopted the Cantina Cardèto name in 2005. On 30 August 2019, it celebrated its 70th anniversary with the Cardèto Vintage range. The project restyled historical labels for Nero della Greca, Arciato, Febeo and Colbadia, restoring medieval symbols and highlighting the heritage represented by the members and their families.
