The 2023 harvest in Montalcino
The 2023 season at Casisano was marked by temperature fluctuations, intense heat and abundant rain at the beginning of summer. These conditions slowed Sangiovese Grosso maturation. Winds across the high hills of Montalcino played a decisive role in maintaining grape health.
After the difficult spring, the vines naturally slowed their development. Sunny days at the end of summer and substantial day–night temperature changes then supported final ripening, color, fragrance and sugar accumulation. The grapes reached full maturity between late September and mid-October, returning Casisano to a later autumn harvest schedule. The bunches were loose and healthy. Production was less abundant than usual, but Giancarlo Tommasi assessed the quality positively.
