About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie in Castelnuovo Berardenga, near Siena, at the southern end of the Chianti Classico zone. Castell’in Villa’s vines are distributed across eight sites with differing soils and microclimates. The parcels used for La Gazzara have south-eastern exposure, stand at 250–300 metres above sea level and are planted on Pliocene sand. The vines are 10–12 years old and trained to spurred cordon. Average yield is 60 q/ha.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of September and softly pressed. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks over 15–20 days. Malolactic fermentation is prevented. Protein and tartaric stabilization are followed by filtered bottling.
Ageing
The wine is refined in bottle for at least three months.
