Phytodepuration: a natural wastewater treatment

Phytodepuration was adopted as a low-energy alternative to mechanically intensive wastewater treatment. The installation artificially reproduces the natural self-purification processes of wetland environments. An impermeable basin is filled with gravel and planted with aquatic and non-aquatic species. The combined action of substrate, plants, effluent and microorganisms removes dissolved organic compounds, producing legally purified water without sludge.
