About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Sammarco was conceived in a territory traditionally associated with Sangiovese, reflecting Alceo di Napoli Rampolla’s interest in Cabernet Sauvignon and his work with winemaker Giacomo Tachis.
Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Merlot. The proportions vary by vintage; no current exact percentages are provided. A published note for 2018 says Cabernet Sauvignon reached as much as 80% in that vintage.
Vinification
The wine spends three months in concrete tanks.
Ageing
Ageing continues for 12–15 months in tonneaux and 12-hL oak barrels, using un-toasted or medium-toast wood. This is followed by 18–24 months in bottle.
Technical data
Production varies with weather conditions, ranging from 8,000 to 25,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Sammarco has a deep, intense colour and a fresh aromatic profile marked by woodland undergrowth and ripe fruit. It is concentrated, with powerful tannins, yet retains an elegant and refined character. The 2017 was noted for balance, refinement, creamy tannins and a persistent, complete finish. The 2018 showed a bright, energetic and polished profile, with blue and purple fruit, lavender, sage, mint and blood orange, supported by pronounced freshness.
Vintage notes
The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon changes by vintage and reached as much as 80% in 2018. Production also varies materially according to the growing season.
Label / history
Alceo created Sammarco with Giacomo Tachis as a Cabernet Sauvignon-led wine in a Sangiovese-focused district. The Italian history records the first bottle in 1980, while the English history says the first bottles were released in 1982.
