About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Bossona is a particularly sunny, favourably exposed site in Montepulciano. Constant ventilation helps maintain healthy grapes. Its Pliocene soil was formed 2.5–5 million years ago and is rich in tuff, stones and fossils, combining good drainage with the capacity to give the wine structure and minerality. The vineyard lies at 350–400 metres above sea level and comprises plantings from 1961, 1997 and 2003. The original vines were planted by Caterina’s grandfather, Alibrando, in 1961. Yields are approximately 40 quintals per hectare, and Bossona Riserva is bottled only in the finest vintages.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
Carefully selected grapes undergo soft crushing. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26–28°C. Maceration lasts 28–30 days, with pump-overs.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 36 months, including at least 20 months in tonneaux, followed by a long period of refinement in bottle.
Technical data
Average annual production is 13,000 bottles. The stated ageing potential is approximately 20–25 years.
Tasting profile
Ruby-coloured with garnet reflections, Bossona has an elegant, balanced and complex structure. Its intense bouquet combines violet, underbrush and spice. The palate is refined, with firm yet velvety tannins and a long, deep finish.
Label / history
Bossona takes its name from the vineyard from which its grapes originate. It became a Riserva in 1999 after extended maturation in wood and bottle and represents the estate’s interpretation of the elegance and grace of Sangiovese from Montepulciano.
