About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Sciaranuova vineyard at Castiglione di Sicilia (CT), planted on terraces at 815 metres above sea level beside the lava field created by the eruption that began in 1614. That eruption continued for ten years, making it the longest documented eruption in the area's recorded history.
The site has black volcanic soil composed of lava sands. It is mineral-rich and contains abundant large structural elements, while woodland and more recent lava flows surround the vineyard. A total of 4,500 Rhine Riesling vines were planted during the estate's first and subsequent years at Sciaranuova.
The vines are trained on espaliers and Guyot-pruned. Cultivation follows organic-agriculture criteria and SOStain® protocols. Wild ground cover is maintained to increase organic matter and encourage soil microfauna. Vine health is managed with small quantities of sulphur and copper; useful insects, mating disruption, zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts are used to control pests and support the plants.

Tasting profile
Light in colour with green reflections. The youthful nose brings white apple, plum, lemon and yellow flowers. The palate is fully dry without excessive acidity, with a pronounced mineral character.
Label / history
White-wine research was a priority when Sciaranuova was first identified, leading to the planting of Rhine Riesling at more than 800 metres above sea level. Eruzione 1614 Riesling debuted with the 2014 vintage. Its name refers to the historic lava flow bordering the vineyard. It is presented as the first Riesling produced on Etna and in Sicily.
