About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on sunny, north-facing slopes in Trapani, Sicily, at 300 m above sea level. Mediterranean winds ventilate the vineyards. The mixed soils are predominantly clay, with a planting density of 4,200 vines/ha and yields of no more than 8 t/ha.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand from the final ten days of August through the first ten days of September. After gentle pressing, the juice yield is limited to 60% of the original fruit. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel tanks for 10–12 days at 16–18 °C.
Ageing
The wine matures on its lees in stainless-steel tanks for three months, followed by at least one month in bottle.
Vintage notes
In 2021, the growing season began slightly earlier than usual. The summer included several very hot days, with rainfall occurring once in July and once in August. Otherwise relatively dry conditions helped maintain healthy fruit, and the harvest was excellent.
Label / history
Firriato was founded in 1985 by Salvatore Di Gaetano in Erice, near Trapani. Under his supervision, the estate expanded through the creation of new wines, the acquisition of additional farms and continuing improvements to its techniques and production equipment.
