Chianti Geografico: a 60-year-long adventure in the heart of Chianti Classico

The account begins at Geografico’s Gaiole in Chianti winery, where a long-standing supplier recalls the cooperative’s origins. Seventeen farmers joined forces during the final period of sharecropping to give the countryside a stronger voice and revive the local economy. Early successes attracted more growers, and during the 1970s and 1980s Geografico carried Chianti Classico into major European and international markets.

The intervening decades transformed production. Old wooden vessels and rudimentary techniques were replaced by concrete tanks, modern equipment and precise oenological control, reducing physical labour and supporting higher quality. Despite those changes, the enduring link between growers, vineyards and the Chianti hills remained the defining element of the cooperative. The Piccini acquisition subsequently began another phase of renewal.
