Mario Piccini questions Sangiovese
Mario Piccini described Sangiovese as the backbone of the group’s Tuscan red wines and compared the producer’s role to guiding a child: the grape’s immediate vigour can be emphasised, or patience and ageing can reveal greater refinement. Its tannins, acidity and capacity to develop make it particularly responsive to terroir.
At Geografico, Alessandro Barabesi leads the exploration of Sangiovese. His collaboration began with Contessa di Radda after the 2018 acquisition and developed into I Terzieri. The three wines originate from Radda, Gaiole and Castellina and are made through microvinification and non-invasive practices. Each is intended to retain the characteristics of its individual vineyard and commune while following the same overarching philosophy. The work contributed to Barabesi being named WineMag.it’s Winemaker of the Year for 2022.
