About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The technical data describe hillside vineyards in the Monte Vulture area around Venosa, Basilicata, at 400 metres above sea level. The vines were planted in 2000 and are espalier-trained with Guyot pruning, at a density of 4,400 vines per hectare. The approximately 10-hectare estate has loose, dry volcanic soils of good structure, predominantly tufaceous and characteristic of mineral-bearing pozzolanic terrain.

Grapes

Aglianico.

Vinification

The 2021 technical sheet records a manual harvest into crates during the first ten days of October, at a stated yield of 90 quintals per hectare. Crushing and destemming are followed by 8–10 days of skin maceration at 23–25°C. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.

Ageing

The wine matures for 6–8 months in new French-oak tonneaux. Bottling generally coincides with the cool spring season, followed by at least three months of bottle ageing before release.

Technical data

I.G.P. Basilicata. Alcohol content is 13% vol. The product page presents the 2022 vintage, while the selected technical sheet concerns 2021. Cellaring potential is 8–10 years, with maximum expression after the second or third year following harvest.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red, taking on orange nuances as it develops. Aromas of woodland berries, cherry and bitter almond lead to an elegant, fresh palate with good structure and well-judged tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with meats, appetizers, first courses and cheeses.
