About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in Friuli Isonzo, on alluvial soils along the Isonzo River, south of Collio. The river divides the area in two. On the left bank the poor soils are a mix of chalk, clay and red gravel. The right bank has particularly chalky, layered soils with white gravel. The riverbed shifts constantly, and the resulting floods enrich the vineyard soils with nutrients.
The climate is maritime, with more rainfall than many other parts of the region. The nearby Adriatic brings warm winds by day, and cool breezes descend from the northern mountains at night. The wide swing between day and night temperatures suits grape growing.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested only at optimal ripeness. After destemming, they ferment by the Ganimede method, a system that uses the energy of carbon dioxide to extract beneficial compounds quickly from the skins. Fermentation time varies with the vintage and the quality of the grapes. When fermentation ends, the wine is decanted and the remaining pomace is pressed.
Ageing
The wine first matures in stainless-steel tanks. It then moves to French oak barriques and tonneaux for a further 10 months before bottling.
