About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Verdeca grows in Salento on sandy soils with limestone deposits. The vines are more than 20 years old, and the vineyard sites and exposures were selected to suit the variety.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in early September, placed in small crates and taken immediately to cool cellars, where they remain until pressing. This is intended to preserve Verdeca’s natural character. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 11–25 °C.
Ageing
The wine rests on its fine lees for three months in the same stainless-steel tanks.
Tasting profile
Fresh in character.
Label / history
Askos was created by Li Veli to showcase ancient Puglian grape varieties at risk of disappearing. The Greek word askos means “decanter” and symbolizes the winemaking tradition established in the area by the ancient Greeks, traces of which survive in wine-vessel remains found throughout Puglia. The range also includes wines made from Susumaniello, Negroamaro, Primitivo and Aleatico.
