La Segreta: the story of a map and a name

La Segreta was the first name assigned to a Planeta wine, chosen in 1995 from the woodland overlooking Ulmo and Lake Arancio. Its visual identity drew on the oldest Ulmo map preserved in the family archive, dated 1825.

The map records features still recognizable in the landscape: the historic baglio on the former Sciacca–Palermo road, the ancient olive grove, the small Arab fort of Mazzallakkar, the river valley and the orange trees that gave Lake Arancio its name.

The story also recalls Diego Planeta showing the future vineyard land to the younger cousins during their annual spring camps in the La Segreta wood. He promised that vines would replace pasture and grain and that the Ulmo house would become a winery. As adults, the next generation planted the vineyards and continued experiments with indigenous and international grapes.
