Viaggio in Sicilia 10 – Monira Al Qadiri presents Geologies of Time
The tenth edition of Viaggio in Sicilia, curated by Valentina Bruschi and Vito Planeta, was presented at Ulmo in May 2026 as part of the programme for Gibellina: Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026 and in collaboration with Fondazione Merz.
Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri, born in Senegal and trained in Japan, was selected by Vito Planeta, Valentina Bruschi and Beatrice Merz. Her project grew from a travelling residency during the October 2025 harvest. Over more than a week she explored geological and cultural memory across Sicily, including Selinunte, Enna, Gibellina, Etna, Noto and Palermo. Photographer Federica Jannuzzi documented the journey.
The resulting Ulmo commission, Falconeri (2026), is an 88 × 70 × 85 cm sculpture in Carrara marble. Its imagery developed from the artist’s engagement with ruins, natural archives and scientific narratives. The work is permanent and intended to become part of Ulmo’s landscape.
