The Poggio Antico Journal – Ep. 4: A green adolescence
Following successful flowering and fruit set, shoots grew beyond the trellis wires and required positioning. Topping encouraged lateral shoots whose leaves provide natural shade for developing clusters. The team tucked canes between wires, removed non-productive basal shoots and monitored each vine. A cool, rainy spring gave way quickly to temperatures around 30°C and peaks near 35°C. The first planting phase at Madre was completed. In the cellar, racking ended and bottling began, starting with the 2024 rosé and 2023 Rosso before the 2021 Brunello. The work illustrates the estate’s emphasis on balanced canopy development, respect for people and land, and precise timing.
