About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from two vineyards at Poggio Casciano, near Florence. Merlot grows in Poggio al Mandorlo, while Cabernet Franc comes from Rapale. The vineyards lie between 290 and 450 metres above sea level on soils rich in clay and limestone, with small proportions of silt. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel—even within an individual vineyard—to express the character of each site and variety.
Grapes
The latest published technical sheet covers the 2021 vintage: 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot. Alauda is made in limited quantities and represents the estate through a blend of Tuscan and international red varieties.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with periodic punching down and délestage. Malolactic fermentation finishes in new French barriques and is supported by periodic bâtonnage.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 24 months in French oak barriques. Barriques from several coopers are selected to prevent the wood from overwhelming the identity of the varieties and vineyards.
Technical data
Production is limited to fewer than 10,000 bottles. The first vintage was 2011, and the 2021 release was the first certified-organic vintage.
Tasting profile
Deep red with violet reflections. The nose combines intense blackberry and black-cherry fruit with herbal nuances, followed by vanilla, coconut and other oak-derived notes. The palate is soft, rounded and dense, framed by an elegant, velvety tannic texture.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C.

The 2021 growing season brought well-distributed spring rainfall and favourable weather during harvest.

Introduced with the 2011 vintage, Alauda is produced only in limited amounts as the highest expression of Poggio Casciano’s artisanal approach and style.
