Beyond clonal and massal selection

Clonal propagation creates a vineyard from one or a few genetically identical plants, while massal selection reproduces a broader vineyard population and preserves variability within a variety. Seed propagation goes further by creating new genetic combinations.

Roagna revived the practice of sowing pips from its best vines to raise daughter plants suited to present climatic conditions. Seedlings resemble their parent plants but possess individual characteristics. That variability may support adaptation, resistance to fungal disease and resilience to climatic fluctuation, while opening a route toward the selection of new varieties.
