Carbon, soil and climate

Roagna links human health, soil health and climate stability. Plants store a substantial share of carbon in their roots and release it gradually to microorganisms in exchange for mineral nutrients. Soil damaged by heavy chemical and mechanical intervention loses organisms capable of retaining carbon, water and nutrients, increasing vulnerability to erosion, desertification and temperature extremes.

A self-sustaining habitat

The vineyards have not been tilled or mown for over 20 years. Living ground cover moderates temperature, slows evaporation, stores carbon and creates natural mulch. Diverse plants return different micronutrients as they decompose.

Other regenerative measures include minimising mechanical disturbance, eliminating fertilisers and encouraging mixed cropping and free grazing where possible. The family considers preservation of this living landscape a responsibility to future generations.
