Working in the vineyard
Pruning
Pruning follows each season’s natural cycles and avoids forcing vines into a standard form. Three-dimensional development is encouraged while preserving the plant’s vascular pathways. Decisions balance harvest quality with the long-term health and lifespan of the vine.
Propagation
Massal selection preserves genetic variability within each variety. Cuttings are the normal method, supplemented by layering, in which part of a mother-vine branch is buried until it forms roots and shoots.
Dead vines are replaced with plants on American rootstock using traditional bud grafting. A meristematic bud is inserted into a cleaned and prepared stock to maximise the grafted vine’s potential longevity. Seed propagation adds new daughter plants with individual traits and may produce material with greater resistance.
