About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vignaverde comes from Contrada Samperi in western Sicily, near Marsala. The vineyard lies on flat, calcareous, medium-textured soil tending towards sand. The Grillo vines are trained on Guyot espaliers at a density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard is described as more than 21 years old; an earlier profile identifies 1996 as its planting year. Yield is 60 q/ha.
Grapes
100% Grillo.
Vinification
Harvest begins around the second or third week of August and is timed slightly early to retain lively acidity and a clearly defined aromatic profile. The bunches are picked and rigorously selected by hand, then softly pressed. The resulting must settles naturally under cool conditions for 48 hours. Its clear fraction ferments with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with minimal use of sulfites.
Ageing
The wine remains for 6 months on its fine lees in stainless-steel tanks. Both fermentation and ageing in steel are intended to preserve its direct, youthful character.
Technical data
Grillo Sicilia DOC. The current wine profile gives 13.5% alcohol by volume, while the official shop lists 12.5% for the 2025 vintage. The available format is 750 ml.
Tasting profile
A young, fragrant and lively expression of Grillo, shaped around vibrant acidity and a precise aromatic profile. It is conceived as a direct, immediate vintage wine rather than an oxidative or long-aged interpretation of the variety.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 10–12 °C. Pair with whole-wheat pasta, sea-bass morsels or rolls, or Sicilian truffle from the Monti Iblei.
Vintage notes
The idea originated with the cooler, less sultry 2013 season, when the Samperi vineyard produced especially vigorous, vivid Grillo grapes with an unexpected green character. This led to a younger, fresher interpretation of the estate’s principal variety. The official shop presents the 2025 vintage.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2013, with the wine introduced commercially between 2014 and 2015. Its name evokes the unusually lush, green appearance of the Samperi vineyard in 2013. The label revives a graphic design from the 1990s, reflecting the wine’s deliberately simple and immediate character.
