From Monferrato to the Langhe: Davide Champion on Scarpa’s Journey

Champion traces the relationship from the first Barolo in 1940 and Barbaresco in 1974 to the 2018 acquisition of Monvigliero, Roncaglie and Canova. Historical production grants Scarpa an exemption to vinify Nebbiolo for Barolo and Barbaresco in Nizza Monferrato. Monvigliero is valued for marl, finesse and ageing capacity; Roncaglie renews the connection created by the 1978 Cascina Roncaglia; and Canova offers calcareous marl, structure and longevity. The project is framed as a commitment measured in decades.
