About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Fiero brings together fruit from two Tuscan origins. Sangiovese grows at 300 m on the north-east slope of the Montalcino hill, in medium-textured soils rich in clay, marine fossils and alberese. Merlot comes from the Larciano estate in the Chianti area, where medium-textured soils are rich in limestone.
Older vines are spur-cordon trained and newer parcels use Guyot. The vineyards are managed according to organic-farming principles. Mating disruption is used against grapevine moth, while organic humus, cover crops and green manure support soil structure and organic matter.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. The latest published vintage, 2024, is 50% Merlot and 50% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The varieties are picked by hand in small crates, harvested and fermented separately. Following destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, with approximately 40–50 days of maceration.
Ageing
The Sangiovese matures for 12 months in large 32–35 hl casks made from Slavonian and French oak. The Merlot spends 12 months in 500 L French oak barrels.
Technical data
IGT. The 2024 vintage has 13.5% alcohol.
Tasting profile
Deep ruby red. The fragrant bouquet centres on dark fruit, blackberry and raspberry, joined by red rose and black-pepper spice. The palate is elegant, soft and balanced, with lively freshness supporting its structure and a long, persistent finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with pasta and ragù, braised red meats, roasted or grilled meats, aged cheeses and other clearly flavoured meat dishes of medium structure.
