Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit

1 cantina. Picolit is Friuli's historic sweet white, and its DOCG spreads across nineteen communes in the east of the province of Udine, close to the Slovenian border — from Tarcento and Nimis in the north through Cividale del Friuli to Buttrio, Manzano and Corno di Rosazzo in the south. Hills and small plains alternate along a north-west to south-east line, giving the vines ample good exposures. Continua a leggere ↓

Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit in breve

The ground is the Flysch of Cormòns, which the Friulians call ponca: alternating layers of marl, 40 to 60 per cent limestone and rich in potassium, and calcified sandstone. Grey-blue when freshly exposed, it crumbles quickly into flaky fragments that yellow as they lose their lime and finally turn to clay.

The wine must be at least 85 per cent Picolit, and aromatic Traminer is not allowed in the rest. Yields stop at four tonnes a hectare, and the grapes are usually left to overripen on the vine or dried in crates or on racks, often in airy lofts, to concentrate them slowly; no enrichment of any kind is permitted. A Riserva ages at least four years from the first of November of the harvest. Within the zone, the small subzone of Cialla, in the north of Prepotto, has rules of its own. Picolit was recognised within the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC in 1970 and became a DOCG in 2006.
