Ramandolo
1 cantina e 1 vino. Ramandolo is the northernmost outpost of Friulian wine: terraced hills in the communes of Nimis and Tarcento, north of Udine, backed against the limestone mass of Monte Bernadia, which shelters them from the cold north wind. The vineyards all face south, between 250 metres at Torlano and 413 at Sedilis, with Ramandolo itself, the hamlet that gives the wine its name, at 369. The slopes are among the hardest to work in the region, often steeper than 30 per cent, on Eocene marls. Continua a leggere ↓

Ramandolo in breve
It is also one of the wettest wine areas of Friuli, with more than 2,200 mm of rain on some 130 days a year, and big temperature swings before the harvest. The climate has whittled the grapes down to three — Verduzzo Friulano, Picolit and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso — and the wine is made from the first alone, known locally as Verduzzo Giallo.
The grapes are picked late, often into late October, sometimes slightly shrivelled on the vine and in good years touched by noble rot. Many growers take their crates to a communal drying centre run by a producers' cooperative; others dry the bunches on racks. Yields stop at eight tonnes a hectare. The result is a sweet, golden white with a firm grip of tannin. Ramandolo was a subzone of the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC from 1970 and became a DOCG in 2001.
