Rosazzo in breve
The hills are Eocene flysch — ponca, as the Friulians call it — with marl outweighing the sandstone. Rock-hard when buried, it is fragile once exposed and weathers into a silty clay loam, moderately alkaline, very high in calcium but poor in nitrogen and phosphorus and not good at holding on to fertiliser.
The wine is a blend with Friulano at its heart: at least half the grapes, with 20 to 30 per cent Sauvignon, 20 to 30 per cent Pinot Bianco or Chardonnay, up to a tenth Ribolla Gialla and a touch of other local whites. Yields stop at eight tonnes a hectare, and new vineyards need at least 4,000 vines. The minimum alcohol is 12 per cent. Rosazzo was drawn as a subzone of the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC in 1970 and became a DOCG of its own in 2011.
