Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva

1 cantina. Around Frederick II's octagonal castle, on the karst limestone plateau of the Murge in central Puglia, Nero di Troia makes the area's most structured red. The zone covers Minervino Murge and parts of Andria, Corato, Trani, Ruvo, Terlizzi, Bitonto, Palo del Colle and Toritto. Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva in breve

The land is hot and dry, and the old ways of training vines — low bush vines and Guyot — suit it; new vineyards may use only those or simple trellises. Because the water table lies very deep beneath the limestone, the vines depend on what the soil holds.

The wine must be at least 90 per cent Nero di Troia, from vineyards yielding no more than ten tonnes a hectare, and it ages at least two years from the first of November of the harvest year, one of them in wood. Castel del Monte became a DOC in 1971, and its Nero di Troia Riserva a DOCG in 2011.
