Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva
The Riserva of Castel del Monte red is the blended counterpart of the Nero di Troia Riserva, grown in the same country: the limestone plateau of the Murge in central Puglia, around Frederick II's octagonal castle, across Minervino Murge and parts of Andria, Corato, Trani, Ruvo, Terlizzi, Bitonto, Palo del Colle and Toritto. Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva in breve
The plateau is karst, a landscape of low rises and hollows, highest in the north-west and gently lower to the south-east. It sits in a climate zone that the Apennines protect from westerly winds, hot and dry in summer, with cold, damp air from the east in winter. Bush vines and low trellises, the traditional forms, are the only ones allowed in new plantings, though existing vineyards keep their rights.
The wine must be at least 65 per cent Nero di Troia, with up to 35 per cent of other local red grapes, cropped at no more than ten tonnes a hectare, and it ages at least two years from the first of November of the harvest year, one of them in wood. Castel del Monte became a DOC in 1971, and its Rosso Riserva a DOCG in 2011.
