Torgiano Rosso Riserva
Torgiano, a hill town just south of Perugia where the Chiascio meets the Tiber, gives its name to a single commune DOCG. Its ground was laid down in the Pleistocene in the Lago Tiberino, the great lake that once filled the upper Tiber valley: sands, clayey sands and clays with seams of lignite, crossed by volcanic tuffs and traces of travertine, while older marine marls and sandstones form the soft hills of about 400 metres around the town. Torgiano Rosso Riserva in breve
Wine has been made here since Roman times — excavations of a Roman farm villa at the edge of town turned up great quantities of wine amphorae — and Torgiano itself grew up as a fortified castrum on Roman ruins.
Torgiano Rosso Riserva is built on Sangiovese, 70 to 100 per cent, with other local red grapes making up the rest, from vineyards cropped at no more than nine tonnes a hectare. It ages at least three years from the first of November of the harvest year, six months of them in bottle. Torgiano became a DOC in 1978, and its Rosso Riserva a DOCG in 1990.
