Label / history
The Folonari family’s winemaking history began in the late eighteenth century with Fratelli Folonari. The company subsequently passed through different owners and periods of changing fortune. In 1912, Italo Folonari, Ambrogio Folonari’s grandfather, and his brother Francesco acquired the Tuscan company Ruffino, which produced Chianti in straw-covered bottles.
In the late 1960s, the family sold Fratelli Folonari, whose production had focused mainly on table wines, and began concentrating on estate-bottled wines. Ambrogio Folonari separated from Ruffino in 2000 and founded Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute with his son.
The resulting group brought together Tenuta La Fuga, producing Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino; Tenuta di Nozzole, producing Chianti Classico, Super Tuscan wine and Chardonnay; Tenute del Cabreo, producing Super Tuscan wine; Conti Spalletti, producing Chianti Classico, Chianti and Rosso Toscano; Ronco dei Folo, producing Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Schioppettino; Tenuta Campo al Mare, producing Bolgheri, Vermentino and Rosato; Tenuta TorCalvano Gracciano, producing Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montepulciano; and Tenuta Vigne a Porrona, producing Montecucco, Morellino, Syrah and Merlot.
