Vineyard and terroir
Aleatico is produced at Fattoria Aldobrandesca near the historic village of Sovana in southern Tuscany. The estate lies in inland southern Maremma, within the Etruscan Tuff zone. Its vineyards occupy flat volcanic terrain with tuffaceous subsoils below the tuff spur of Sovana.
Grapes
Aleatico, an old Tuscan variety used here for a traditional passito-style wine.
Vinification
The 2022 harvest was divided into two lots. One portion was vinified immediately; the other dried for approximately one month in dry, well-ventilated rooms to concentrate aroma and structure. Both portions then followed the same process. After gentle crushing, the fruit entered stainless-steel vats for approximately one week of maceration, extracting both varietal aromas and characteristic color. Fermentation proceeded below 20 °C and was stopped at the desired sugar level by rapidly reducing the temperature.
Ageing
The wine was stored at low temperature until bottling.
Technical data
Sovana DOC Superiore. Latest published vintage: 2022. First vintage: 1997.
Tasting profile
Aleatico 2022 is bright ruby red. The delicate nose brings together wild rose, strawberry and cherry. Its palate balances sweetness with freshness, while the aftertaste is led by characteristic notes of rose and red fruit.
Vintage notes
The 2022 season began with a cold winter. Abundant rain, especially in January, and low temperatures continuing through March delayed the start of vine growth. Spring arrived slightly later than in preceding years, bringing mild days and above-average temperatures that supported regular budbreak, flowering and fruit set. A hot, typically Mediterranean summer with very little rain allowed slow, progressive ripening and produced healthy, aromatic, fully mature bunches. Harvest took place in several passes during the first week of September, with repeated vineyard selections of the finest and ripest fruit.
Label / history
First produced in 1997, Aleatico combines fruit vinified immediately with fruit concentrated through drying. This approach retains varietal aromatic richness while bringing freshness, structure and softness to the traditional Tuscan passito style.
