Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie at 280–310 m above sea level. The vines are 15–22 years old and grow in marl, an ancient clay with a high limestone content. They are farmed organically, with yields limited to promote concentration.
More broadly, Argiano’s vineyards experience cool summer nights at around 300 m elevation and moderate rainfall. Warm influences from Maremma support slow ripening, while Monte Amiata provides protection from adverse weather. The marly limestone and clay soils retain moisture well.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. For the 2022 vintage, Merlot was picked first in early September and Petit Verdot last, late in the month. Each variety was vinified separately and macerated for about 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks.
A separate general production account states that fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks with natural yeasts at a controlled 20–25 °C for two to three weeks.
Ageing
The 2022 wine matured for about 18 months in French barriques, 60% new and 40% second-use, sourced from selected producers. A separate general account in the description instead states that Solengo is aged exclusively in new Burgundy barriques.
Vintage notes
The 2022 season began with mild, dry weather, bringing budbreak seven to ten days earlier than usual. Summer was hot, but thunderstorms in late August allowed ripening to finish in ideal conditions. The harvest produced healthy, disease-free bunches and highly concentrated must.
Label / history
“Solengo” is a Tuscan term meaning “lone wild boar,” referring to the blend’s independent and powerful character. Giacomo Tachis created the wine in 1995. Its first release was included in Wine Spectator’s “Top 100.” Hans Vinding-Diers succeeded Tachis after his retirement.
