Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a 0.5 ha plot in the Cannubi vineyard in the commune of Barolo. Planted in 1954, the organically farmed vines grow at 250 m on calcareous, loamy soils with a southeast exposure.
Vinification
The bunches are harvested by hand in the second half of October and selected in the vineyard. After gentle crushing and destemming, fermentation and maceration take place in oak casks over 30 days.
Ageing
The wine spends three years in medium-toast French oak casks of 15–30 hL. It is bottled without filtration and matures in bottle for a further year.
Tasting profile
Powerful and richly textured, with a distinctly masculine character.
Serving and pairing
Decant for one hour before serving.
Vintage notes
In Piedmont, the winter of 2015 was harsh, snowy and rainy. A warm spring created good conditions for budbreak and flowering. May and June were rainy, followed by one of the region’s hottest Julys on record. Periodic rain in August relieved the vines and prevented drought. Despite concerns that the hot summer might leave the grapes short of acidity, these fears were largely unfounded. The crop was small but of impressive quality.
