Vineyard and terroir
The Cortese for "Ca' Bergaglio" grows on sandy soils in the Gavi wine-growing area. The vineyards face southwest at 300 metres above sea level, which gives the vines plenty of sunlight. The vines are more than 40 years old on average.
The Castellari Bergaglio estate lies in a quiet, green part of Gavi, in the province of Alessandria in Piedmont. Its vineyards are in the countryside around Rovereto, surrounded by oak woods; the village takes its name from rovereto, "oak wood". Local farmers call the hilly area "high land". White varieties are grown here on the region's characteristic reddish soils, rich in clay and iron.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness. After gentle pressing, the juice is separated from the skins, cooled and left to settle. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature and lasts up to 20 days, to bring out as much aroma and flavour as possible.
Ageing
The wine rests for half a year before bottling.
Tasting profile
The producer's whites are ready to drink a few months after they are made, and they stay so for several years, during which time helps their complex range of aromas to open up.
Label / history
"Ca' Bergaglio" is a personal project of owner Marco Bergaglio, the third generation of his winemaking family. He grew up among vineyards and lives in Rovereto, and works the vineyards of Gavi every day. Gavi is a varied landscape of hills and mountains where the scents of the Mediterranean Sea can be felt.
The Castellari Bergaglio winery was founded in 1890. It is run by Mario Bergaglio, his wife Wanda Castellari and their son Marco. They follow established local winemaking traditions while paying close attention to modern technology, and oversee every stage from vineyard to winery. The range comprises five white wines and grappa.
